What does LULCC stand for?

Land Use and Land Cover Change

What is the difference between Land Cover and Land Use Change?

Land Cover - the physical and biological cover over the surface of land, including water, vegetation, bare soil, and/or artificial structures.

Land Use - related to human activities such as agriculture, forestry and urban construction that alter land surface processes including biogeochemistry, hydrology and biodiversity.

How do changes in land cover affect the global carbon cycle?

Disturbance to soils and removal of vegetation during deforestation. Tillage disturbs surface and releases soil carbon.

What are some common LULCC process that can be observed by remote sensing?

Desertification - persistent degradation of dryland ecosystems by human activity and/or climate change

Tropical Deforestation

Fire

Food production - agriculture and ranching

Urbanization

How is desertification most commonly monitored using remote sensing?

NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index)

What are the earliest observations of deforestation from remote sensing?

1972

How does the urban heat island effect change based on surrounding vegetation?

Larger the city = stronger the heat island.Cities located in forested regions have stronger heat islands than cities in grassy or desert environments.
