Border states

1. Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri were having a tough time deciding to stay or leave the Union because, they had close ties to important locations.


2. Each state was important because they were strategic locations.

Blockade

1. The purpose of the strategic plan for the South is because it would prevent supplies from reaching, the south states like Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana the confederacy. Plus cut off trade to European Countries.


2. The Union should blockade Southern parts.

Anaconda plan

1. The North's plan was called this because it was named after the snake that squeezes its prey to death.


2. The three key strategies were first the Union should blockade Southern ports, second the North intended to gain control of the entire Mississippi. Lastly the North planned to capture Richmond, Virginia, the Confederate capitol.

Thomas Jackson

1. Thomas Jackson got the nickname "Stonewall" Jackson because Jackson was seen holding out heroically, "like a stone wall".


2. He was on the Confederate side, so I he got the name because no one was able to get past him.



First Battle of Bull Run

1. The leader of the Union was General Irvun McDowell. For the Confederate side of things it was lead by General P.GT. Beauregaurd.


2. The battle took place in northern Virginia, about 5 miles (8 KM) from Manassas Junction near a small river called Bull Run.


3. The Yankees won.


4. The Northerners realized they were far outnumbered.

1. Tributaries- small rivers the flow into a larger river.


2. The two ironclads in the war was on the South side.


3. The outcome of the ironclads was the Confederates won.

Battle of Shiloh

1. The leaders of the Confederacy Albert Sidney Johnston and P. G. T.


2. The battle take place in early April 1862.


3. The battle took place in south along the Tennessee River toward Corinth, Mississippi, an important railroad junction.


4. The battle was won by the Union


5. The casualties were as large as 23,000.


6. The battle was important because it gave the North control of the Mississippi.
