Dissident

disagreeing especially with an established religious or political system, organization, or belief



Eg. The dissident was jailed for refusing to obey the law.

ASSENT = agree; DISSENT = disagree; DISSIDENT = a person who dissents/disagrees.

Poignant

causing a strong feeling of sadness



Eg. a poignant story of a love affair that ends in tragedy

sounds like "pregnant", think what the situation of a woman would be who is pregnant and watching a video of a "woman giving birth".. obviously gr8 but painful as well

Verdict

law : the decision made by a jury in a trial: a judgment or opinion about something



Eg. was anxious to hear her best friend's verdict on her new boyfriend

Plebiscite

a vote by which the people of a country or region express their opinion for or against an important proposal



Eg. "the administration will hold a plebiscite for the approval of constitutional reforms"

plebiscite: By Plebiscite we mean - People cite their opinion towards some political government

Rebuff

to refuse (something, such as an offer or suggestion) in a rude way



Eg. For the present he experienced a sharp rebuff of fortune, which he met with his usual fortitude.

re (reject) + buff (bluff) -> you will reject/snub/beat back what a bluff (person who pretends or lies) says !

Plausible

(of an argument or statement) seeming reasonable or probable.



Eg. "a plausible explanation"

Plausible rhymes with possible "Something that may or may not be possible" true,but open to doubt.

Reinstate

to put (someone) back in a job or position that had been taken away



Eg. Bugg for reinstatement was denied.

re(again)+in+state -> again in previous state.

Portend

to be a sign or warning that something usually bad or unpleasant is going to happen



Eg. "the eclipses portend some major events"

When we reached the port's end (sea port) we saw some dead bodies, which gave a sign that something bad was going to happen.

Intervene

: to come or occur between two times or events


: to become involved in something (such as a conflict) in order to have an influence on what happens



Eg. intervened in the argument before any real harm was done

Potable

: a liquid that is suitable for drinking especially an alcoholic beverage



Eg. "there is no supply of potable water available"

POT+TABLE a pot on table in which water is drinkable

Behest

: an authoritative order, command


: an urgent prompting



Eg. At the president’s behest, the prisoner will be pardoned for his crimes.

Behest = BE in HASTE . imagine a army officer gives order to soldier and tells to do fast with fierce sound.

Potpourri

: a mixture of dried flower petals, leaves, and spices that is used to make a room smell pleasant


: a collection of different things



Eg. a potpourri of hit songs from the last 10 years

imagine a pot in which you are making a puri (Indian dish).... you put all kinds of stuff in it to make a puri... so that the mixture is a heterogeneous one! hence potpurri..

Discretionary

available to be used when and how you decide



Eg. discretionary spending on luxuries dropped dramatically last year

Pragmatic

dealing with the problems that exist in a specific situation in a reasonable and logical way instead of depending on ideas and theories



Eg. a pragmatic man, not given to grand, visionary schemea

Eg. when we asked the salesclerk to adjudicate our disagreement, she agreed with me that the white shoes looked better

Predilection

a natural preference or special liking for something



Eg. a young lad with a predilection for telling tall tales

pre(before)+dialect(local language); you generally become partial when you are taking an interview and you meet someone who speaks your language ( :) assume the interview is in the US)

Weevil

a small insect that eats grains and seeds and that can ruin crops
