What are the three routes that sympathetic paths can follow and where do the post-ganglionic fibers run for each route?
*spinal nerve route, some postganglionic fibers exit a ganglion on the way to the target sweat glands, piloerector muscles, and blood vessels of the skin and skeletal muscles. (to skin)
*sympathetic nerve route, postganglionic fibers leave by way of sympathetic nerves that extend to the thoracic viscera and head, including sweat, salivary, and nasal glands; piloerector muscles; blood vessels, and dilators of the iris. (head, thorax)
*splanchnic nerve route, some fibers that arise from spinal nerves pass through the ganglia without synapsing and continue as splanchnic nerves. These lead to a second set of ganglia called collateral (prevertebral ganglia) where they synapse with the postganglionic neurons. The collateral ganglia contribute to the abdominal aortic plexus, which includes the solar plexus. (abdominal/pelvic cavity)
How could blood vessel width be regulated using only sympathetic enervation?
the rate of sympathetic signaling
high sympathetic signaling= vasoconstriction
low sympathtic signaling= vasodialation
What are the characteristics of receptors? What are the 4 types of info sent by receptors?
