Senator Henry Clay. Compromise between the North & South that allowed Missouri, a slave state, and Maine, a free state, to be admitted into the Union.

Why did the US need another compromise in 1850?

California was gained from Mexico and wanted to join the Union as a free state.

Stephen Douglas. It contradicted earlier laws

They did not believe in slavery and they wanted Kansas to remain a free state.

People in the North had to go against their beliefs and return run away slaves.

South, because they got their runaway slaves back.

Why was Abraham Lincoln chosen to represent the Republican party in 1860?

He would stand up against slavery.

South Carolina.
