"Hace tres semanas que ellas tuvieron un problema con eso." (They had a problem with it three weeks ago.)
An alternative for actions or states in the past and the notion of "ago" is verb in the preterit + hace + period of time.
"Cambié mi dinero hace una hora." (I changed my money an hour ago.)
To express two or more actions in the past, use "hacía" : imperfect tense + period of time + que + verb in the imperfect
"Hacía cinco meses que yo viajaba por México cuando conocí José."
