Describe the following Mail Services and how they are used?

X.400, SMTP, POP
X.400 - Standard for organizations Message Handling Systems (MHS) like email and how they are stored and forwarded.
SMTP - Simple Mail Transport Protocol is a standard for email transmission over IP networks
POP - Post Office Protocol (Hotmail, Gmail) is an application layer protocol used to retrieve email over a TCP/IP connection.
Explain the function of the Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) Server?
•Centralizes TCP/IP configurations and manages the allocation of TCP/IP
information by automatically assigning an IP address to computers configured to
use DHCP.
•DHCP leases an IP address to hosts. The Integrated Shipboard Network System
(ISNS) typically uses a three or seven day lease.
•Can also assign the subnet mask, default gateway, and IP addresses for WINS
servers.
Describe how the following Directory Services work?

x.500 , LDAP , DNS
x.500 - Active Directory, ITU standard for Directory Service, World-wide distributed database of addresses, White pages directory

LDAP - Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) is an application protocol for querying and modifying data of directory services implemented in Internet Protocol (IP) networks.

DNS - Domain Name Server which takes an IP address resolves it to a name (www.example.com)
Explain what System Management Software (SMS) is used for with regard software distribution on a network?
Push system updates to computers or remote control of computers
Describe the Navy's Extensible Markup Language (XML) policy and what body sets standards for DON XML?
XML is a set of rules for encoding documents in machine-readable form. This tool is only as good as your people are good at tagging information.

Standards are set by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The Navy Standards are set by DONXML Work Group.
What is the Ethernet and how is it used?
The original Ethernet is now called Ethernet II and is used on afloat installations. Its based on Carrier Sensed Multiple Access (CSMA) protocol.
What is the range of its capacity?
10 Mbps to 10 Gbps depending on wires used, single or duplex, hubs and switches and distance.
What are the advantages and disadvantages?
Advantages: Cheap, Easy, fast for most uses.
Disadvantages: Suseptible to interference and evesdropping speed, and distance limits.
Common types LAN topographies?
Star, Bus, Ring
Mesh is combination of more than one of these types.
What are the basic components of an IP address?
Two parts: Network Address and Host Address.
A subnet mask is used by the computer to determine each of these two parts (i.e. 255.0.0.0) Class A
What are the 4 classes of IP addresses?
Class A 1-126
Class B 128-191
Class C 192-223
Class D 224-239
Two types of IP address Schemes?
IPv4 - 32bit Current standard
IPv6 - 128 bit which has 10^28 times more IP addressed than the IPv4
What is the advantage of running DHCP on your network?
- Centralizes TCP/IP configuration and allocation
- IP addresses are leased
- Can assign Subnet Mask, default gateway as well.
When should you assign a static IP address?
Static is used for things people need to share (such as a Printer, Web Server, RAS server, Network Drive).
Standard port numbers used and their protocols?
Port 80 - HTTP - TCP/UDP
Port 443 - HTTPS - TCP
Port 53 - DNS - TCP/UDP
Port 20 - FTP - TCP
Explain what Hubs are and how they are used?
Hubs are connectivity devices that regenerate (repeat) digital signals from one node to the rest of network. They don't perform sophisticated functions. Inexpensive equipment but you get what you pay for.
Difference between a Hub and Switch?
Switches are devices that subdivide networks into smaller pieces. Switches are intelligent devices that interprete MAC addresses and forward packets as needed where hubs are dumb and just repeat. Switches are replacing hubs.
What is a router and how is it used on the LAN?
A router is a device that connects multple LAN's together and direct data via shortes route. Routers have multiple ports that can connect LAN/WAN's running at different speeds and a variety of protocols.
Explain the common uses of a Workstation, Firewall, Secure Mail Guards, Intrusion Detection Devices, Printers and SSL accelerators?
Workstations - Allows users to work and access data on the network.
Firewalls - Separates the internal network (LAN) from the external network.
Secure Mail Guard - Allows emails to be sent between security enclaves.
Intrusion Detection Devices - Signature and anamoly detection.
Printer/Print servers - allows users to print or connect to common printers on the LAN.
SSL accelerators - SSLaccelerator offload SSL processing.
Identify and explain the function of the DAA?
the Designated Approving Authority is the official in the DOD with the authority to formally assume responsibility for operating a system at an acceptable level of risk.
