Muscle actions and definitions

Adduction
Movement toward the midline of the body
Body planes

Cross, Transverse or Horizontal
The transverse plane dividing the body or body parts into upper and lower segments. This plane is a cross section perpendicular to the longitudinal planes.
Body position and direction

Superior, Cranial or Rostral
Refers to a body part or structure being closer to the head or higher than another body part or structure.
Body planes

Sagittal
The longitudinal plane dividing the body into right and left parts. It is parallel to the median plane and may be applied to the head, torso, and linbs. (not equal parts)
Body position and direction

Posterior or Dorsal
Refers to a body part or structure being more in back than another body part or structure.
Body position and direction

Anterior or Ventral
Refers to a body part or structure being more in front than another body part or structure.
Body position and direction

Inferior or Caudal
Refers to a body part or structure being closer to the feet or lower than another body part or structure.
Body position and direction

Distal
Refers to limbs only, body part or structure that is futher away from the middle or median plane or the root of the limb than another body part or structure.
Body position and direction

Lateral
Body part or structure that is futher away from the middle or median plane than another body part or structure.
Body position and direction

Medial
Body part or structure that is closer to the middle or median plane than another body part or structure.
Muscle actions and definitions

Abduction
Movement away from the midline of the body
Muscle actions and definitions

Site of attachment
Where the muscle connects to bone or other tissue. (every muscle has two sites of attachment)
Muscle actions and definitions

Inversion
Refers to feet only, To face the soles of the feet toward each other
Muscle actions and definitions

Flexion
Decreasing the angle between two bones
Muscle actions and definitions

Depression
Downward or inferior movement
body position and direction

Proximal
Refers to limbs only, body part or structure that is closer to the middle or median plane or the root of the limb than another body part or structure.
Muscle actions and definitions

Supinatian
To turn the palm upward or anterior (soft side up)
Muscle actions and definitions

Extension
Increasing the angle between two bones
Muscle actions and definitions

Origin
The site or the muscle attachment that moves the least.
(generally the beggining is closer to the midline)
Muscle actions and definitions

Pronation
To turn the palms down or posterior (softside down)
Muscle actions and definitions

Eversion
Refers to feet only, to face the soles of the feet away from each other
Muscle actions and definitions

Dorsiflexion
Toes up (flexion) at the ankle, to move the top of the foot towards the shin
Muscle actions and definitions

Plantar flexion
heals up(extension) at the ankle, to move teh sole of teh foot downward (standing on toes)
Muscle actions and definitions

Insertion
Site of the muscle attachment that moves the most. (generally the end is furher away from the midline)
