A patient with Parkinson's is given levodopa & carbidopa together.
Why is carbidopa given in combination w/ levodopa? |
Levodopa CAN cross the BBB and is converted to the active form of Dopamine w/ in the CSF by decarboxylase
Carbidopa can NOT cross the blood brain barrier but it does prevent peripheral decarboxylase activity Thus by preventing peripheral decarboxylase activity it prevents the activation of Levodopa in peripheral tissue Thus reducing the likelihood of arrhythmias due to excessive dopamine |
