4 forms/stages of Hemoflagellates

1. Amastigote or Leishmania

2. Promastigote or Leptomonas

3. Epimastigote or Crithidia

4. Trypomastigote or Trypanosoma

Form of hemoflagellate that is more or less ovoid in shape without a free flagellum. It is also adapted to intracellular existence in the vertebral host

Amastigote or Leishmania

Form of hemoflagellate that is elongated, spindle-shaped, with pointed ends and a free flagellum that arises from the kinetoplast at the anterior end.

Promastigote or Leptomonas

Form of hemoflagellate that is elongated and spindle-shaped, with the free flagellum continued from the anterior end backwards along the margin of an undulating membrane and ending at the kinetoplast which is situated anterior to the nucleus

Epimastigote or Crithidia

Form of hemoflagellate that is morphologically similar to the epimastigotes except that the flagellum on the margin of the undulating membrane ends at the kinetoplast which is situated anterior to the nucleus

Trypomastigote or Trypanosoma

Trypanosoma brucei exhibits only what 2 stages?

1. Epimastigote
