The Vocalization of the Definite Article.

When the "...הַ" is attached to a word whose initial consonant is א,ע, or ר...
...it is vocalized by a קָמָץ (ָ) to compensate for the inability of these consonants to take a דָּגֵשׁ

ex. הָרְחוֹב, הָעֶרֶב, הָאָרוֹן
The Definite Article before
"יְ"

When the defninte article is attached to a word that begins with "יְ"
it retains its regular vocalization, but as a rule the "יְ" recieves no דָּגֵשׁ

Ex. הַיְסוֹד - the foundation
The Preposition ...בְּ

When ...בְּ contracts with ...הָ
...it becomes ...בָּ
ex.

in the closet בָּאָרוֹן = בְּהָאָרוֹן
in the evening בָּעֶרֶב = בְּהָעֶרֶב
in the street בָּרְחוֹב = בְּהָרְחוֹב
