While coming up with their rationale they looked the case of Hawaii Housing Authority v. Midkiff. In that case land was taken from lessors and given to lessees for just compensation to reduce the concentration of land ownership. They ruled that the state’s purpose of eliminating the “social and economic evils of a land oligopoly” was a valid reason for public use (Kelo). The court’s ruling for this case said that it would be “incongruous” to hold that the city’s interest in economic benefits to be derived from developing the Fort Trumbull area. The government’s pursuit for a public purpose will more than often benefit private parties.…
According to Stephen Gardiner , "The Industrial Revolution was another of those extraordinary jumps forward in the story of civilization." This refers to how in a whole the Industrialization was a good thing. While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily negative consequences for society because of pollution and child labor, it was actually a positive thing for society. Industrialization's positive effects were child labor laws, new inventions and especially the concept of mass production. One of the most influential and long lasting effects were the development of child labor laws.…
In the 1870s, a citizen of Belin, Germany, boasted of his city’s rapid growth. “We have already 800,000 inhabitants, next year we shall have 900,000, and the year after that a million” (249). He predicted that Berlin’s population would soon rival those of Paris and even London. The increase in population was getting greater and greater. “The population explosion that had begun during the 1700s continued through the 1800s” (249).…
The Caliente-Enterprise zone is divided into three parts; eastern, central and western. This zone extends from the western boundary of the mildly extended Colorado Plateau toward its western end at the PSZ. The eastern part lies at on east-west trending part of the Colorado Plateau margin; the central part coincides with the Caliente Caldera Complex, and the western part coincides with or ends at the PSZ (Axen, 1998).…
"Louisiana are the most right-leaning states in the union” (Newport). The South reliably votes for Republicans and is often referred to as a Republican stronghold. In 2008, “Republican presidential candidate John McCain won Alabama by 21.6 percent” (Nypost). This highlights the regions right-leaning tendencies.…
Additionally, the evolution of electricity during the Second Industrial Revolution enabled advancements in transportation and communication that would assist in connecting people throughout the world. Before this era, larges cities were overcrowded with horse-drawn traffic because “the cheapest car cost twice a worker’s annual pay.” However, through the advances in electric motors and the mass production of vehicles, transportation became affordable to the middle class. People began to relocate on the outskirts of the city because they could now afford transportation into the city. Life in the city was dangerous, filthy, and lacked a family environment.…
On the total sixty houses projects that were considered from the Public Works Administration, a third was made apart for the black occupancy. Different architects made different ways of house projects for African Americans with different recreational places around their houses. To demonstrate, In the book, one of the houses projects listed by Robert Leighninger is the Harlem River Houses and Gillette mentions, “The Harlem River Houses incorporated all the amenities considered ideal to modern housing, including a central courtyard to enhance sociability, a nursery school with an attached outdoor play area, social rooms, and a large athletic field.” (pg. 137) This shows how some of the house projects were also very important for the African American and how important was the idea of making the neighbors more close to each other.…
Each of these groups could unintentionally or purposely be the source of redlining. The attributes of potential homeowners- age, income, race, etc.- affect what sort of home they seek. They favor better quality neighborhoods, and are more likely to purchase a worse home in a better area than a better home in a less desirable place (Kantor and Nystuen,…
Urbanization, by definition, is the movement from rural areas to urban areas and the ways society adapts to this change. In the late 1800’s, this is exactly what happened, with rural living people moving to urban areas. This movement not only caused more people in the urban areas, but a huge influx of people, mainly immigrants, into the cities. Due to that, many discrepancies were made in how society worked in the time, which led to people having to adapt into the new way of life that they were offered.…
How The Americas Change The Americas are forever changing, like the tide of the sea they ebb and flow sometimes in ways more prosperous than others yet retaining that fascinating pattern that is still so true to its nature. In America we endeavor for change, most of the time we strive for positive change, modification and transformations that will ultimately improve our country and the lives of our citizens. We are consistent in the very fact that we wish to advance our society and to go boldly into the future. As a relatively young nation we have made quite the name for ourselves and have already left our mark on the world.…
The zip code 30114 is located in Cherokee County, a north metro Atlanta county which contains the cities of Woodstock, Canton, Ball Ground, Holly Springs and Waleska. The issue of suburban sprawl is the most pressing problem in the 30114 zip code. I choose this zip code as opposed to the zip code where I live 30064, because I'm constantly observing and critiquing sociological information where I live, so I choose to observe a different area from a sociological perspective. My boyfriend lives in this zip code so I am in the area frequently and observe the constant changes and problems that are occurring as this area is developing rapidly.…
Many areas that have and are being gentrified are African American communities because of the poverty most people of color live in. When a neighborhood has abandoned buildings or old factories, landlords come in and turn them into…
he term Gentrification is coined together by a British Sociologist Ruth Glass to describe the movement of middle class families into urban areas causing the property value to increase and displacing the older settlers. In the past decades, gentrification have been defined and refined depending on the neighborhood 's economic, social and political context. According to Davidson and Less definition, a gentrified area should include investment in capital, social upgrading, displacement of older settlers and change in landscape. Many urban cities like Chicago, Michigan and Boston have experienced gentrification, however, it is affecting the Harlem residents more profoundly, uprooting the people who have been living there for decades, thus destroying…
Beginning in the early to mid 1800’s the United States started to experience a flow of immigrants settling in the urban United States, and the rapid immigration went on to continue for the next few decades. These events during the nineteenth century brought many benefits to the American economy such as increased production of goods, the creation of new technologies, and higher employment rates. As a result, the United States economy experienced large growth during the urbanization of America, as well as during the Market Revolution.…
A life in New York City is a vastly personal experience that is famous for being unlike a life in any other metropolis. “City Limits” by Colson Whitehead explores the idea that everyone who goes to and lives in New York has their own, unique version of the city. From the moment an individual steps foot in the city, she is “building [her] private New York,” (Whitehead 1). My personal New York —the food stands, pharmacies, and avenues I would come to call home—formed when I moved to Manhattan to attend New York University.…
