A Republican, he previously served as a member of the Montana Senate, representing Senate District 2 from 2009 to 2011. Zinke served as a U.S. Navy SEAL from 1986 to 2008, retiring at the rank of Commander. One of his biggest mistakes was, His greatest asset as a candidate, his military record, was facing serious questions. After some investigation, it had been discovered that he had over exaggerated on his importance in the military. Zinke spent most of the Republican primary talking about his role as a Navy SEAL. While anyone who chooses a career path of service to the nation should be commended, Zinke is facing serious charges about his behavior in the military and his tendency to overstate his resume once he left. He sponsored and co-sponsored many bills which include, Armed Forces and National Security, Public Lands and Natural Resources, Energy, and International
