Zinc has been used to create reliable alloys since 500 BC [4]. These alloys included brass (copper + zinc) and supplemented bronze (copper + zinc + tin). So what gives zinc this amazing property to alloy usefully with other metals? Simply put, electron structure. Pure zinc is a unfavorable material to use, it has a low toughness and is generally brittle with a strength less than steal. These properties make it unusable in most modern mechanical processes. The structure of zinc (HCP) is caused by the electron structure of zinc the HCP is the lowest energy that the zinc atoms can arrange themselves in to. The brittleness of zinc is caused by its hexagonal close packing, the lattice structure fails to create dislocations. Instead of bending (like copper) it shatters because the stress could not be relieved. During the 3D crystal experiment the HCP arrangement was one of the structures that was explored. It was interesting that 2 different arrangements; hexagonal close packing and cubic close packing contain the same number of atoms.
