Zika Could Potentially Stop Cancer from Recurring
Zika infects and kills the stem cells that turns into cancer
Annika Castaneda | Science | 9/8/2017
Studies say that in human cells, the Zika virus infected and killed the stem cells that become a glioblastoma, or an aggressive brain tumor, but it left healthy brain cells alone. Will this create a new cure or treatment, or will it also spread through your whole body too?
Jeremy Rich, and a team of scientists think they can help cure glioblastoma, the type of cancer that the U.S. Senator John McCain was diagnosed with in July. And unfortunately, most patients live only about a year after they are diagnosed with glioblastoma. In recent studies of human cells, Zika infected glioblastoma stem cells and halted their growth, therefore allowing patients to live longer.

This is a total game changer so many more people who are diagnosed with glioblastoma can live longer and spend more time with their families. If you were just diagnosed with it, would you accept the Zika treatment or have the possibility of risking an earlier death? If it was me, I would totally chose the Zika treatment over chemotherapy, one because it is amazing that a virus can help the body, two, I could live longer, and three you don’t become bald, as a mark of having cancer.
Rich and his group of other scientists are now testing in mice whether combining Zika with traditional cancer treatments such as chemotherapy is more effective than the Zika or Chemotherapy treatment by itself. Because Zika targets the cells that generate tumor cells, it might prevent tumors from coming back. And wouldn’t that be

A new study has been developed in hopes of treating and curing HIV. The main agent is a protein called ZFN that can delete another protein called CCR5. The CCR5 is required for certain types of HIV to enter and infect your T-Cells. T-Cells are white blood cells the body uses to fight HIV, but the most important of these are CD4 T-Cells. HIV is known to infect the CD4+ T-Cells in your blood.…

A “virus” is defined as: “an infective agent that typically consists of a nucleic acid molecule in a protein coat, is too small to be seen by a light microscope, and is able to multiply only within the living cells of a host” (Document B). Originating from Uganda, the Zika virus was first discovered in 1947 in an infected money in the Zika forest, where its name originates. The Zika virus is a typical one-stranded RNA virus with nucleotide sequences relating it to other African and Asian virus strains. It is capable of infecting other species such as monkeys, elephants, lions, zebras, and rodents. Primates, like humans and monkeys, are known to be the primary hosts and reservoirs.…

    Zika Virus Vs Black Death

I think the health crisis from Zika virus is different from the Black Death. Black Death was a type of plague that was spread via the bites of infected rat fleas. The name Black Death derived from the swollen glands from the victim’s neck, armpits and inner thigh that turned black as they filled with blood. Victims often died after 12 hours of being bitten. While Zika virus is spread through mosquito bites, tends to cause fever, skin rash and conjunctivitis.…

According to the CDC, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the best method to treat the Zika virus is to rest, stay hydrated, and to employ pain relieving medication. With no specific treatment, the cases involving Microcephaly will continuously increase, hence, a growing number of children will suffer from the effects of it. Microcephaly, similar to any medical disorder, has more than one impact. For example, children diagnosed with this condition may experience problems such as seizures or hearing loss, therefore contributing to the urgent need for a cure. Although no vaccines are available as of now, scientists continue to work hard to invent one for overcoming Zika.…

Recently discovered Zika has swept the world off its feet. This dangerous disease is spread mostly through the bite of an infected species of mosquito. Primarily targeting pregnant women, it can be passed down from mom to fetus and in turn cause certain malicious birth defects. Before last year, the virus was a miniscule, controlled, barely noted annoyance. Scientists are now beginning to consider environmental chances that encouraged Zika's explosion into a global crisis.…

Overall, this video explains the positive outcomes of using viruses, that once were considered deadly, to treat cancer. The documentary shows how ongoing research and trials of this kind of treatment is happening simultaneously in different places, and using different viruses. The first case mentions the study developed by Dr. Bell, who concluded that smallpox viruses can attack, and kill cancer cells without harming surrounding cells. Therefore, he and his team are working in treatment trials using vaccines containing genetically engineered smallpox viruses. On the other hand, Dr. Rusell came to a similar conclusion by treating myeloma, an extremely aggressive cancer, with a modified measles virus.…

The Zika Outbreak The Zika virus is an emerging new illness that may have more consequences than originally thought. Ever since an outbreak in Uganda in 1947, the world attempted to fully understand Zika, but even now, the medical community cannot quite comprehend everything about it. As more cases of the virus are being reported, people are attempting to combat and eradicate the illness using old and new methods. If the Zika virus continues to spread, future generations may receive the heavy end of the impact and at a point where nothing can be done.…
