The 7 voyages of Zheng He
In 1403, the Yongle Emperor ordered the construction of a massive fleet of ships capable of traveling the Indian Ocean successfully. His political motive for starting these expeditions was so that he could enlist states an imperial tribute system that increased the domestic prestige of the emperor because china considered itself the center of the world. The voyages consisted of 27,000 men aboard 317 ships. In 1405, Chinese imperial fleet set out on its first voyage to explore and trade with the world. The entrusted retainer known as Zheng He was put in charge of constructing the ships that would be used to sail the Indian Ocean. He was born in 1337 at the beginning of the Ming Dynasty to a family of central Asian Muslims who had been displaced during the Mongol upheavals. Zheng He and the Yongle Emperor Zhu Di were a dynamic duo that left their mark on history and China’s success.
Although the expeditions aimed to gain political success, the expeditions also sought peace and friendship and I think that is why the expeditions were such a success. The Emperor had his head on straight and didn’t ask for too much. He had ambitions that included making other countries aware of Chinas power and aware that it was standing strong. They traded things such as bracelets, rings, jewels, and gemstones in Aden where they also earned Zebras and leopards in tribute. They eventually reached Kenya and Mogadishu, who weren’t very friendly towards Zheng He’s fleet at first. One of the most interesting things I found about this voyage was that one of three kings died while visiting China where is family remained after. His surname can still be traced back in present day China which I found extraordinary(

    The first reason as to why we should not celebrate the voyages of Zheng He is the trips were costly. When you look at map on Document A you can see he traveled in an unusual route, this proves that he was already traveling to well-established ports. It was all planned and he was not traveling to unknown lands, or really discovering anything. During his seven voyages he traveled about 105,300 miles combined, not only is that a long distance to travel but it also costs a lot of money. After all, one of the explanations to why the Chinese officials dismantled the fleet and destroyed the records was because it was contributing to the bankruptcy of the Ming treasury.…
