The scary fact is that many of these sweeteners pose even greater health risks than what seems as a mere sugarinduced weight gain compared to artificial sweeteners. One of the main problems is that the newer zero calorie sweeteners have not been adequately experimented on in order to assess long term impact on human health.

Taking a closer look at Splenda for example, a $1.5 billion industry, shows the negative side effects from using the artificial sweetener. The symptoms from consuming the product range from seizures, dizziness, migraines, allergic reactions, weight gain, increases in blood sugar, blurred vision, to gastrointestinal issues. Sucralose, a nonnutritive sweetener, is the number one selling artificial sweetener in America today. The marketing and branding of Splenda is advertised as "Made from sugar, so it tastes like sugar." The main ingredient in Splenda, sucralose, was designed to resemble sucrose which is found in natural sugars. Since the two are not identical, Splenda is not in fact made from sugar. The process of creating sucralose makes it a molecule that does not exist in nature. Considering that the molecule is not natural, it is not metabolized or digested by our body. If our bodies were able to metabolize it, then sucralose would no longer have zero calories and would therefore become …show more content…
The consumption of chemicals from zerocalorie sweeteners, leads to a flustered sensory system. When consuming something like zerocalorie sweeteners, that tastes sweet but don’t actually contain any calories, our brain triggers a pathway because of the sweet taste, but since the calories are non existent, our body doesn't know when to stop consuming the artificial sugar.
On account of artificial sweeteners preventing us from associating sweetness with caloric intake, it results in us craving more sweets. Because our bodies ingestive and digestive reflexes are equipped for that intake, but when false sweeteners (zerocalorie sugars) do not contain any calories, our bodies sensory system becomes thrown off balance. In conclusion, people may overeat or expend less energy than they normally would. Foods that contain sugar in their natural form are not only highly nutritious and high in fiber, but low in the glycemic load.
Zero calorie sweeteners are just as bad as sugar, but in different ways. Industries
