During said interview, Yolanda holds a sad expression but her voice isn't lined with regret. In Julia Alvarez’s novel How The Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, Yolanda, one of the main characters as well as one of the narrators, is a woman who is unlike most women of her culture. One can see how Yolanda is different when she bashes her cousin for being all done up. When Yolanda sees her cousin again for the first time again she recalls that “In her designer pantsuit and frosted, blown-out hair, Lucinda looks like a Dominican magazine model, a look that has always made Yolanda think of call girls” (Alvarez 11). However, the injustice illustrated by Gay is not the one from one civilian to another but rather from the justice systems originally designed to keep all Americans safe notwithstanding their skin color nor racial affiliation. According to Gay’s piece, the crimes that the so-called justice systems perpetrate range from unlawful harassment, incarceration, and even extra-judicial slayings. We have a pretty good idea what it is, but we are not as good at turning capital into economic potential. De Soto also defines capital as the parallel life of an asset.…
