The idea of travel, for many, is incredibly exciting. It’s the promise of the unknown, along with adventure and novelty. It can be arresting and it can be frightening. However, fear doesn’t stop everyone from wanting to venture out, especially not young people. Yukiko Matsui was only 19 years old when she came to UW-Whitewater as an exchange student from Japan. It was her first time travelling outside of her country and she soon found herself alone in Whitewater, WI in mid-January. Matsui says she was utterly shocked by the cold. She wasn’t prepared for the unforgiving weather. The clothing that she had brought was definitely not appropriate and she was scared. Matsui was scared of being in a completely new place by herself and unprepared. She had to go out and buy new shoes better fit for snow and a thicker coat. This was the first of many new things Yukiko Matsui would have to learn and get used to in her new life in America. Matsui is only one of the million international students that entered the U.S. last year according to the 2016 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange data. Her first impression might have been a chilly one but she soon got to venture out on the town freely. It allows you to see the world differently, like in the case of these international exchange students. They each their own background, culture, and language to compare and contrast their new experience in UW-Whitewater to. It is what makes entering a new school and country exciting. It is what creates the sense of novelty. Each and every single international student that enters the country gets to go back home with a new perspective, that is a little over a million different perspectives and minds that are opened to a new world every year.
