The physical and social settings within, both, Year of Wonders and The Crucible strongly portray the belief that religion explains and counteracts fearsome occurrences and express societal views of what is good and bad. The people of Salem and Eyam, due to being protestant societies tend to look to religion in times of fear and conflict. Within The Crucible, after it becomes common knowledge of the group of girls dancing around a fire, the towns folk begin ‘mumbling (about) witchcraft’ and questioning whether ‘the Devil may be among (them)’. This helps show that their unnecessary need for accountability and explanation overrides the possibility of innocence, thus distorting their depictions what is moral.
