Workplace violence occurs in the form of physical abuse, emotional abuse, or a threat to workers that creates a risk to the health and safety of an employee or multiple employees. Occurrences range from intimidations to individuals acting on physical damage inside or outside the workplace that can affect a single individual or multiple victims. With the lack of attention and regard to mental health awareness in the United States, workplace violence is a growing concern for employers and employees nationwide. Employers offer protections against workplace violence through the establishment of zero-tolerance policies directed to govern employees’ and employers’ actions.
Physical abuse occurs when a person makes the conscious decision to perform an act that results in physical contact with an employee in a manner that can cause harm to the individual. Emotional abuse is harder in comparison to physical abuse since the speech, and behaviors of the abuser are more likely to be subtle while manipulating, controlling, and derogatory (Spector, Yang, & Zhou, 2015). Threats of violence occur when a person makes a statement of an intention to cause physical damage or other hostile action.
