The baby boomers have created an increased population of individuals 65 and older. As these individuals are living longer, plans must be set in place to support them not only financially but also physically. Some individuals look towards institutional facilities or independent living facilities to place their aging relatives, and/or spouse. Elderly individuals would like to stay in their normal environment for as long as possible, but this is often not an option as sometimes the caregivers do not feel they can fully meet the growing needs of these individuals. For these purposes, I scheduled and conducted a site visit. This visit was essential as it helped me observed the initial point of contact with clients. At this office visit, I had a pleasure of meeting with the CEO, a staff member, and a caregiver of a client suffering from dementia. The office is not spacious but the space is appropriate for conversations and engagement. The office although small allows caregivers a place to come in and express their concerns in private. Often the person with dementia does not come to the office visit and if they do they are monitored while the caregiver speaks with a staff member in private. This allows the caregiver to be more open as they can freely express themselves free of guilt. This setting is also important as some clients who are suffering from dementia are not aware they have dementia so when the word comes up or conversations addressing dementia are have they often question who is the term in reference to because they do not have …show more content…
In addition, I would expand the program to provide respite care for all clients. Studies have shown stress associated with being a caregiver. I would like to eliminate some of that stress by providing temporary relief for caregivers for a day or an extended amount. This would eliminate some stress for caregivers and allow them to get some down time. This is important because if they caregivers are stressed they cannot adequately provide care. Also, the stress that caregivers face may transfer to the aging adults and make them stress knowing their physical health has declined and they are no longer able to care for themselves. This may result in depression and older adults feeling like they are a burden on the
