The issue of equal rights is serious and is one that has expanded throughout the United States over time. Equality applies to women gaining the same rights as men in such areas as equal pay, the ability to vote, and equal employment opportunities. In 1776, Abigail Adams, the first lady at the time, wrote to her husband John, "In the new code of laws, remember the ladies and do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the husbands.” (Eis,1998) Abigail felt strongly that women should be regarded with the same respect and importance as men and should have the same power and rights as well.…

America is equal and America is free: is a saying I have heard many times throughout my life as a student. In elementary school, we learned about the American Revolution and the fight for freedom and equality against the British. We learned about the Civil War and the freedom of slaves. We learned about the Industrial Revolution and how people immigrated over to America from Europe and found a better life. We learned about the Civil Rights movement and how the abolishment or Jim Crow lead to the equality of black and white people.…

However, using the power of newfound technologies has led to the individual to be able to research, speak out, and unites with others to break free of the grasp of large corporations. Professor Tim Wu analyzes the growth of digital technology and the internet in, Father and Son, and he concludes that: “It may be true, today, that the individual holds more power than at any time in the past century”(Wu 556). Wu also realizes that if society is not changed now, then individuals will continue to lose power to make a difference when he says: “Whether or not he can hold on to it is another matter”(Wu 556). Recently there has been a pervasive discussion about wage inequality, particularly raising the minimum wage. Many argue that fifteen dollars per hour or even the Presidents ten dollar ten cent minimum wage is too high with reasons such as small businesses will lose profit and close, people will have no incentive for higher education, and the overall elimination of jobs. Past arguments like these against minimum wage have been recycled since the passing of the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. Examining historical data on minimum wage increases will illustrate if these criticisms have been accurate. As a matter of fact historical data would be the ideal information to study when trying to prove the accuracy of each criticism, because since the enaction of this law back in 1938 much data has been accumulated.…

since a strong social safety net and enhanced social programs mean the necessary guaranteed income would be significantly lower, i'm assuming that you're not arguing for the elimination of those universal programs we DO have--and in fact would recognize the need to have a much more robust system of programs that would include a national housing strategy, universal childcare, pharmacare and significantly more public funding for universities and colleges. not only would this bring us minimally in line with other industrialized nations but they would also help ensure more efficient and effective service provision and, ultimately, help drastically reduce socioeconomic inequality and poverty. which, as i'm sure you know, costs us as a society a…
