The term “race” historically has been critiqued for having numerous broad and complicated definitions. As a result, racial differences are commonly blamed for many different conflicts throughout various regions of the world. In The Work of Comparison: Israel/Palestine and Apartheid, Peteet discusses how Palestinians and Israelis are constantly fighting over territories such as Gaza and the rights to control and maintain property. Similarly, the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis illustrates that race has many different definitions and are only determined by location. On the other hand, race shouldn’t be considered as the sole reason for disputes throughout the world, since many of them emerge from other social issues. The definition of race has more differences than similarities throughout the world simply due to the variation in social conditions and reasons for conflict. Growing up in the United States, young students are taught about slavery and historical figures such as Martin Luther King who helped bring an end to discrimination of African Americans due to their color.
