Word Crimes: Video Analysis

If you grew up watching the catchy School House Rock videos, you are likely to have learned a lot of grammar from them. You may think that the video Word Crimes performed by "Weird Al" Yankovic is another fun way to learn something new, but you would be wrong. This is a parody of the song Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke featuring Pharrell Williams. This video was not my favorite, but it did leave a lasting impression on me. Although, Word Crimes was very overwhelming and annoying, it pointed out many mistakes that we use in today’s society and it reminded me of some grammar rules I was already aware of and others that I did not know. Word Crimes can be a very difficult video to watch. There are constantly words and descriptions flashing across the screen. “Weird Al” is known for having his own quirky sense of style in his performances and by what he wears. This video was too eccentric for me. I am someone who likes to have order and I could not concentrate on this video because it seemed way to chaotic. The video’s lyrics did match up well with the song’s melody, but I would not …show more content…
I do not believe that this is necessary or helpful. The video spends a lot of time pointing out what people do wrong, but very little time teaching them how to fix it. What about the people who have not had luxury of a solid educational environment due to low economic status or health issues? I don’t think watching this video is going to make them instantly better at grammar, but it will probably make them feel bad about themselves. In reality, I think many people have a decent grip of proper grammar, but they choose not to use it to save time or they simply do not care. The importance of grammar ultimately comes down to the context it is being used in. If you are texting a friend, it is not as important to use proper grammar than if you are writing on a job application or a reference

Ben Zimmer’s article entitled “Chunking” from the September 2010 issue of the New York Times, raises the question: should collocation education be used to teach English? The article focuses on the importance of chunking and how useful it is in teaching and developing others in the language of English. Zimmer uses his son as a prime example of how kids of his age unknowingly pick up myriads of chunks, “or idioms,” throughout the span of their childhood; he explains, “As Blake learned these pleasantries… I wondered how much-or how little-his grasp of basic linguistic etiquette is grounded in the syntactical rules that structure how words are combined in English” (133). Besides this example, he cites other phrases such as “Won’t you come in?”…

In “So I'm Like, Who Needs This Grammar Stuff?” by Kendall Hamilton, the author seems to be a little open and okay with using wrong words and making grammatical errors. He seems like he does not really care because he mentions how in the future it won’t matter. He mentions how an english professor said “...most of the grammar rules are already dead or dying.” He also mentions that “students language skills in general seem to be on the downswing.”…

A friend of mine was approached at the Tucson Reptile Show, and told to "watch out for me, I am the grammar nazi." Right off the bat, let's clear this up. I love the title. Absolutely love it. When you whine and bitch that someone is a "Grammar Nazi" what you are actually saying, is "Watch out for that guy, he is smart." or "Watch out for that guy, he paid attention in school instead of fucking around in class."…

Mona Chalabi argues the point that grammar is less important than what people have to say in the video, “Grammar snobs are patronizing pretentious and just plain wrong.” She makes strong arguments against grammar snobs who correct people. I agree with her arguments; I have felt offended when I have been corrected. However, grammar snobs help educate our society. Mona has a well-developed argument, but it could be altered to reach the full potential.…

Grammar can be a difficult concept to grasp for many. The English language itself is one of the most difficult languages to learn. There are so many rules as well as correct and incorrect ways to write. It is no shock that when teachers teach about grammar they do it in a way that isn 't fun. Simmons mentions that "many students when asked what their least favorite activity in language arts was, would respond with grammar instruction and practice"(pg. 387).…

The study of Newspeak is very interesting, and it has it’s benefits and drawbacks. Getting rid of words from our human vocabulary can be helpful in that it makes speaking more efficient, easier to learn and to converse with, and removes bad words that are not okay in our society. But getting rid of excess words can also be a setback if it takes away words that help us describe stuff better and more vividly, If we were to start taking away unnecessary words from our vocabulary, that would be good because that means we would be taking away words that we do not crucially need. This would benefit society because it would give us a shorter list of words to use when describe things and talk to people without sacrificing words that we use consistently.…

How, if at all, did your perception of gangs change after watching the video and completing the reading? The video nor the book really changed my perception of gangs. Since I can remember I have been either watching shows like gangland or taking classes on this exact topic or something very similar. I have always been aware that gangs are in place so that groups of men can control different sections of impoverished neighborhoods as well as sell drugs or commit other illegal acts and make loads of money.…

This week’s work was focused on two themes that I feel guided my learning to becoming a more effective teacher of writing. These themes included developing as a writer through writing invitations and teaching students how to write effective sentences through sentence combining instruction. Living “The Writing Life” In completing this week’s writing invitations, I really challenged myself to try out different genres of writing in response to the prompt. I started off the first writing invitation as more of a reflective journal of sorts.…

When the video talked about how children were sent away to boarding school because their parents did not know how to handle them or communicate with them, it broke my heart. These children did not have regular communication with their families so they seemed to rely on the other children for love and support. Hearing the interviewees talk about their schooling adventure was pretty cool because they all had similar experiences. However, their experiences were not the best. Many of the people interviewed said that their deafness was treated as a handicap that…
