Women's Collective Identity Formation In Sports

One study that I found about collective identity is “Gender Differences in Accepting and Receiving Requests for Tasks with Low Promotability.” This study is about tasks that individuals prefer to be completed by someone else such as writing a report, serving on a committee, etc. In the study it was found the women, more than men, volunteer or when asked, accept this type of tasks request. The study also show evidences the women, more than men, say yes to tasks with low promotability such as nonrevenue-generating tasks. This indicates women will progress more slowly in organizations. Moreover, the study results demonstrate that, “in a mixed-sex group, women more than men perform tasks that, while benefitting the collective, place them at a relative disadvantage.” There are many ways organizations can use collective identity to increase women promotability rate for example promoting gender diversity. What I mean by that is organizations should have an equal balance of males and females at high level …show more content…
In the study evidence demonstrate that the ice hockey organization was an important factor in the women's successful challenge of exclusionary practices at a university ice rink. The study also highlight the critical role that collective action plays in challenging exclusionary gender hierarchies and practices at the ice rink. However, there are ways sport organizations could use collective identity to not have sexism in male-dominated sports. For example addressing how competitive and experienced women could be at any type of sports. Something else organizations could do to help increase collective identity would be to advocate awareness to stop
