In the past, Korean women were known as the weakest person in the family as they were forced to please their traditional roles as a daughter, wife and mother (Gelb & Palley, 1994). These traditional roles were significantly influenced by the Confucian system of gender norms, regarding men as the dominant authority. According to Park and Cho (1995), the distribution between sexes in family structures was extremely strict as women had no rights to inherit as the head of the household. By the late 1960’s, due to an increased engagement in education and career opportunities, the structure system began to change. The expansion of authority changes in the structure of family role as it becomes more democratic and less discriminating (Park & Cho, 1995). This means that women were no longer portrayal as the lowest status in the family. In Korean traditional society, Confucianism has always been influential towards education between gender inequalities (Gelb & Palley, 1994). At the time, education was more concentrated to males as females had to follow the patriarchal social system. The Confucian image of women being able to authorize education was limited as it was believed that women did not profit in domestic matters. Since the independence of Korea established in 1945, the pathway in relation to education equality gradually develop, allowing females in Korea to be educated (Gelb & Palley, 1994). The acceptance of equal gender opportunity to access education, guide many Korean women granting to provide education for their child in a way to modernize equality and improve individualism (Choi, 1999).
