Even though support for an expanding choice in wine for the consumer continued to grow, laws in many states prohibited the consumer from being able to purchase the wine the wanted directly from wineries and retailers. With advances in technology, a business is able to gather customers preferences on which wines prefer and communicate with that customer. Customer relationships is a new form of thinking, it allows the company to concentrate on satisfying the customer’s needs. With wineries, this is generally done through wine clubs. Wine clubs would be ideal for direct to consumer shipping.

A customer expects to be able to purchase a product, in this case the wine they want, by the means of their choosing. Be that at the winery directly, or remotely if they desire by telephone or online. There is growing support for expanding the customer’s choice in procuring wine, particularly in the direct to customer shipping, which a majority of states use legislation to block. This support is coming from the U.S. Supreme Court, Federal Trade Commission, and many state legislators. However, it’s not just legislation that blocks the direct to customer shipping, wholesalers also seek to block the shipping to protect their state-sanctioned monopolies. During the time that number of wineries grew, the number of wholesalers decreased by 75 percent during that same 30 year period. With fewer wholesalers, there are fewer places to purchase wine. This means that those few wholesalers alone have the right to determine which wines are available and which wines aren’t in most states. More than 60 percent of the wine in the U.S. market is controlled by the ten largest wholesalers. …show more content…

A person who is not familiar with a particularly winery can surf the web to find out what wines are good or have value, they can also find wines they like. They also know that at this particular time, if they were previous customers and visited a certain winery and interested in buying those wines again, they can’t if they are unable to travel to that winery for the purchase. A consumer knows if they are looking for a specific wine, they may not be able to find it at a COSTCO or Trader Joes, but they would be able to find it online. It is known that the state legislation prevents that consumer from purchasing that specific wine unless they are able to travel to that winery. Yes, the customer can purchase a bottle of wine from COSTCO and place it on the table, but there is no story about that wine other than that it was bought at COSTCO. However, if legislating is changed and the customer can order a specific wine and have it shipped directly to them, they can now talk about their visit to that winery, their experience in the tasting room, and how the wine was

Throughout 2008 151 million cases of wine were sold, whilst Bonatelli Wines contributed 1.5 million cases sold. Meanwhile, whilst targeting a brand recognition level of 33% among end consumers, when surveyed only 25% of end drinkers had heard of or recognized Bonatelli Wines. In his article, “Time to end Pennsylvania’s Monopoly on Liquor Sales,” Philip Heron, a native Pennsylvanian and editor of Delaware County Daily News, voices his opinion on Pennsylvania’s restrictive alcohol law and urges for change. Pennsylvania is an alcohol beverage control state; thus, citizens may only purchase wine or liquor at state owned Fine Wine and Good Spirits stores. Similarly to these products, single bottles and six-packs of beer can only be purchased in state licensed taverns or restaurants; furthermore, cases or kegs must be purchased from state licensed beer retailers or distributors. Importing any liquor or beer into Pennsylvania from another state is illegal, according to the law; therefore, Pennsylvania’s law transforms…

Recent research findings have revealed the dwindling sales of original ice-wine brands from Canada in the international wine market due to high supply of synthetic ice-wine. As cheap as it is, synthetic wine destroys the true nature, taste, and heritage of the ice-wine products. The side effects of synthetic and counterfeit ice-wine brands are massive including company losses, lack of employment, increased poverty, and increased rural-urban migration. This means that as the company’s sales dwindle, many workers are laid-off and traditional grape farmers lose their market (Booth, Colomb, & Williams, 2009).…
