William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, United Kingdom, on the approximate date of April 23, 1564, three days before the first known record of him, his baptismal record. He was the third of eight children born to a tradesman and glovemaker, John Shakespeare, and Mary Arden, his mother (The Life). William ended up being John and Mary’s oldest child to survive. Having three younger brothers, William grew up as the “big brother” of the family. John, being a leading citizen of Stratford, William went to Stratford’s grammar school. The school focused on Latin writing, acting, and memorization of classic plays. It is assumed that William attended the school until he reached the age of fifteen (Shakespeare’s Life).

“Between 1590 and 1592, Shakespeare’s Henry IV series, Richard III, and The Comedy of Errors were performed.” Due to the plague, the theaters were shut down in 1593, and Shakespeare began writing two narrative poems, “Venus and Adonis and The Rape of Lucrece”, and is assumed to of started one of his sonnets.
