I choose to do my topic on William Herschel and the discovery of Uranus. The discovery of planets happened in two phases. First was with Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Planets come from the Greek word for wanderer. They were called this because stars appear to not change positions relative to one another while planets would move across the sky. William initiated the second phase of planetary discovery by studying the sky and making his own telescope to do so. He began his search for double stars and nebulae. He also observed the Moon, Sun, and planets of our solar system. Eventually, on March 13, 1781, he discovered Uranus.
