In ancient times, the Galenic physiology stated that there were two types of blood, venous and arterial, which had distinct pathways and functions functions relating to the liver, the heart and brain. Furthermore, the veins in the arm below it had appeared normal however they were still swollen indicating that the blood had flowed through the arteries and then back up the arm within the veins.
