Why We Shouldn T Video Games Be Considered Art

The world will soon consider video games, a fun pastime, art. Many people today are fighting for people to consider video games a work of true art against people who believe it shouldn't be art. There are many forms of art out there today, but why not video games? Many people believe that the only art is like music, and paint and brush on a canvass, but this is wrong. Art is defined as, “the application or expression of human creative skills…”(Merriam-Webster). It doesn't say video games can't be art. I think video games should be considered art because, they use great music(soundtracks),well designed graphics, and let people use their whole mind to make games.

One reason games should be considered art is because of their soundtracks, or music.

This is a very important piece of information. Music helps a game along, and focus on what is important. Many games that succeeded had great music. An example of this is “The legend of Zelda,” games. These games all had great songs like the main title theme, song of storms, and Zelda’s lullaby. All these songs helped the player stay focus to get through their quest to save Hyrule. Also, “To maintain the immersion that is so important in video games, the music must always match the setting and situation that the player is in,”(Watson, gazette). Many times while playing games, you have probably heard the music intensify while fighting an enemy, or a very hard boss. This is very important in games. If you're struggling the music can add to the suspense of what's …show more content…
My first reason for this is, “I can smell the grass,” Chen recalls. “I can feel the wind. I can hear the sound of the grass waving. You just can’t capture that with video. The only way I can capture the truth in this place and this feeling is by artistic exaggeration,”(Tucker smithsonian). This is one of my reasons because graphics can make you dive into the game and make you feel like youŕe there, in the game. My next reason why graphics help is,¨Since early graphics and narratives were so limited, players had to draw heavily from their imaginations to make the scenarios come alive,¨(Tucker smithsonian). This is important because with the help of graphics what the player thinks has now the ability to be created in a great picture. My last reason for graphics is, “Gamers can till fields, build hospitals, steer the wind. They can be inspired to feel guilt or joy or moral ambiguity, They can be transformed instead of just distracted.”(Tucker smithsonian). This might not seem important but it is very important. With better graphics everything can be seen so much better and it gives life to the art that has been

Firstly, Roger Ebert follows the definition put forth by Plato, which Seneca and Cicero agreed with, that “art is the imitation of life.” Jones, similarly, says that “A work of art is one person’s reaction to life.” Both writers argue that by following this definition, video games can never fall into the category of art. This sentiment is wrong for two reasons. Firstly, technology and culture is further ahead than language – people and creativity is evolving while dictionaries and definitions are lagging years behind.…

The limitation to defining a word so opinionated leaves out room for self-expression. The traditional ideas of what is considered art should be broadened; granted, although not tangible, art can be seen through ambitions, emotions, and expression through appearances when not limited to the customary definition.…
