He had changed an entire societies views on African American and a new way of protesting. Martin Luther King had practiced many ‘sit -ins’ and encouraged others to do the same. People began practicing doing sit-ins, and learning how to behave when faced against the opposing side during these ‘sit-ins’. During practices they would yell at each other, hit each other, pour things on each other, and even spit on each other so that they could be prepared for the real protest. They went through all of this, so as to be unfazed by the horrors that they would face during the protest. However, Martin Luther King made it clear that there are certain steps before you can truly become part of a nonviolent campaign. There would be a lot of self-reflections, and a fact checking to ensure that the protest is not only a peaceful one, but a fair and wise one. “In any nonviolent campaign there are four basic steps: 1) collection of the facts to determine whether injustices are alive 2) negotiation; 3) self-purification; and 4) direct action (Letter from Birmingham Jail {1963} paragraph 5).” I can honestly say that because of Martin Luther King, our perceptions racism and discrimination have changed. I cannot say that lynching has ceased to occur, or people don’t face injustice anymore, but I can say that we are stepping in the right direction.
