On April 20 under the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico their oil platform sank and crumbled the pipe that was connected to it releasing a fair amount of oil. The whole was immediately plugged, but engineers could not help the oil that was already spilled. Approximately 4.9 billions of barrels of oil were released into the Gulf of Mexico, but only a portion of it was recovered.
