Spending two and half hours in each classroom, I learned a great deal about early childhood education from ages birth through eight, and the effort and skills that it takes to create a stimulating learning environment. For my infant, toddler, and preschool observations, I spent my hours at the CCC Childcare Center located in our college while for my kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade observations, I spent my time at Casey Park Elementary School. During my observations at the CCC Childcare Center, I learned plenty about the methods and practices that go into early education before primary grades. The preschool classroom really stood out to me because the centers in the classroom were very open ended and filled with lots of manipulative for…
According to the ACLU (May 2013) the School to Prison Pipeline refers to the policies and practices that funnel our nation’s students out of classrooms and into the juvenile and justice system. The pipeline is a reflection of the the priority of incarceration over education, and starts with inadequate resources in public schools. High stakes testing, over policing, and poor zero tolerance and suspension practices all perpetuate the pipeline. Al Jazeera America (2014) writes of the disparities between African-American and Latino youth in schools. Racial minorities appear to bear the brunt of zero-tolerance policies and out-of-school suspensions.…
The founder of this program, Olds believes that parents who wait for their children until the age of four to send to preschool are wrong because there is no difference in their lives. For example, the author restate what David Olds said “Olds was blunt: I don’t think this program makes a difference, and we won’t know with available data. But I think we can design an intervention that will make a difference and that can be evaluated so we’ll know whether it works” (62). In this quote, Olds claims that his invention of sending…
I am a student at Pasadena City College. I am taking the Child Development 20 (Introduction to Curriculum Planning) this semester. For this class, I am required to complete five observations. I am currently working at Canyon Early Learning Center in Monrovia as a teacher’s aide. I work with preschool children at this site.…
Van Acker & Wehby (2000, p.93) state that, “The daily routines of child and youth development occur primarily within the specific contexts of family, neighborhood, and primarily within specific contexts of the family, neighborhood, and peer group. The school serves as an important point of convergence of the social context.” Children of poverty by and large do not enter preschool with the same soft skills ( communication, social, and behavioral skills expected at school) as children from higher-income families (Miller, 2003; Payne, 2003). This leads to children feeling separated from the school culture and gives way to…
It is an excellent opportunity for every little boy and girl to receive a quality preschool education. Preschool has the ability to expand a child’s learning opportunities and therefore prepare them for kindergarten. Educators agree to afford all young children access to a quality early education, as it is necessary to ensure their readiness for school; despite the mixed results preschool education evaluations showed. The most productive period of mental development in a child’s life occurs during the first few years of life. It is crucial that children are given opportunities to play, as it will enhance their creativity, imagination, cognitive, motor and emotional skills.…
The article I have chosen to read was Disappearing Act by Michael Gurian. This article specifically focused on how the male attendance at universities and higher learning institutions has changed dramatically over the years. For example, up until the late 1800’s women were not able to further their education. Perhaps the author wrote this article because he wanted to bring it to the audience’s attention about how the drop in male attendance has been increasing over the past couple years. But in order to get a better understanding we will first discuss issues that can be seen from the early school years, then we will look at what the universities and institutes were like then and finally, we will see what the universities and institutes look…

However, nowadays the earlier their education starts the better chance children have to succeed and meet the high standards set in place by our society. Therefore, the proportion of children participating in preschool has increased. Almost 66% of children nationally attend preschool each year according to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL). “Preschool is generally understood to be school provided for children before they enter publicly funded kindergarten to grade twelve programs” (Brown, 2008, p.1).…

I asked questions concerning the reasons they decided to place their children in a preschool program and what they expected of it. I also asked what type of activities they used to increase or promote their children’s ability to read and write. Both parents indicated that they wanted their children to be better-prepared for kindergarten. They believed that preschool would help with giving their children the proper tools to succeed. Both parents also reported that they expected to work close with the teachers and be able to assist their child’s learning.…
The teachers are capable of informing the parents and elementary school teachers on the level of learning each child is at in order to properly place them into classes. The benefits of determining how beneficial preschool is was shown in the HighScope Perry Preschool Study which followed several individuals until the age of forty. It became evident that children that went to preschool showed a better standard of living throughout their lives and tended to be successful. This expands on the idea that attending preschool is an advantage in the overall success of an individual. Thus, making preschool easily accessible to everyone regardless of the family’s social economic status is ultimately beneficial for all of…

Independence is a key factor in raising children, a child most learn how to do things with out a parent. An early education improves behavior and socialization; children who begin daycare or preschool by age three have better relationships with their peers (Bateman). A daycare brings children together to engage in communication and creative play with other children, which is necessary for good social skills. Children that sit at home watching TV and playing video games are not being socialized, which can result in bad behavior. Also, children get to bond with kids before going into kindergarten and may make the change into a traditional school much easier.…
