Steroids users have been found to indulge in impetuous acts and steroids have been often used as the justification. Users of high dosage steroids have often been troubled with psychotic tendencies and heightened levels of anxiety. Other effects include loss of sleep, euphoric tendencies, paranoia, and depression. Users have also been known to exhibit intense mood swings and in extreme cases, they can form split personalities. Steroids been known to cause side effects which can be visible on the user’s face, it can cause eye damage, as well as hair damage such as male pattern baldness. Stomach disorders are also common when using steroids such as feeling bloated, it can cause nausea pursued by rounds of vomiting, which can contain visible traces of blood. The stomach lining, development of stomach acids, and stomach mucus all become irritated by steroids which would cause nausea and vomiting. Very few school in the United States test for abuse of illicit drugs. A survey has been passed around schools all around the country and it’s been estimated that close to 9 percent of the secondary schools conduct some sort of drug testing by some sort of drug testing programs, presumably focused on athletes. Also, less than 4 percent of the Nation’s high schools test their athletes for steroids which are also when most teenagers are most likely to begin the usage of steroids. Current studies are trying to determine if these drug tests are reducing the abuse of steroids or helping find ways to cover up for them. Studies on steroid educational programs have shown that by only teaching students about negative effects does not convince the youth not to use steroids. “These days the temptation to use steroids in sports has become too great for many young athletes.” (Jim Sensenbrenner). Unfortunately it has also become too tempting for many others trying to get a better looking body.
