Primarily, when Sheriff Heck Tate went to the Ewell residence he saw that Mayella was beat up. No doctor was called when she was allegedly raped. She is a nineteen-year-old girl that accused a black man named Tom Robinson of rape. When Tom would help her the children would always be present and all over the property. While Tom is in the witness chair, Atticus asks Tom where the children were and Tom responds, "She says they all gone to town to get ice creams" (Lee 258). This is out of the ordinary since the Ewell's are extremely poor and cannot afford ice cream. With the little money the Ewells had, it was never spent on ice cream. This leads to Mayella planning to grab and kiss Tom with no possible witnesses against her. In Tom Robinson's case, it was not possible for him to know what she was planning. This leads to prove that Tom had nothing to do with the rape of Mayella.
In Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird the encroachment in the trial occurred because of Tom Robinson's ailment, and affirmation of two characters in the story. In today's society, many unfair events occur but it never sways obvious evidence. Maybe Harper Lee is the reason courts are fair
