Why Is Tipping Important In The Restaurant Industry?

Millions of people over the years have worked and received tips for their services in the restaurant industry. While working shifts, servers and bartenders have customers they have never waited on before, some they see every other week, and others they see every day. Over time, many servers as well as bartenders could tell you that their tips from different customers can vary even when the final bill and the service where the same. People all over the U.S have been taught when growing up by the people before them when and how to tip after receiving service at a restaurant. Nowadays, “…tipping is a social institution. It has come a long way from the occasional London coffeehouse practice of attaching coins to notes to the waiter, “To Insure Promptness” (T.I.P.) (Crespi 424). I question whether or not society’s current tipping habits are in consideration of the fact that they are wanting to receive better service in the future and whether or not people over-all tip because it is a social norm.
While a server or bartender does get paid by their employer to do their job efficiently, they rely heavily on the tips that come from the customers for motivation. Studies have shown

They told David that the customers who choose to leave a smaller tip are often spoken of in much less than a favorable nature within the waitperson culture. Waiters and bartenders tend to not discuss tips while working nor should they, but they do when their shifts are over and done with. An example, I see a table come in that I have waited on multiple time who tips at least 20% everytime they come in to eat. I see them sit down in my co-worker Brooke’s section, and let her know that those specific people tend to tip very well when they leave. Brooke will most likely take care of them to the best of her ability to make sure she gets the good tip I told her they usually leave for excellent
