Lying is justified when it is used to protect and care for others. For example, a poll shows that two-thirds of people say it is okay to lie to protect feelings. When you use a lie to protect others people see it as an act of protection. Many people don’t want to ruin a relationship or friendship just because they don’t want to do something. In paragraph 10 Cohen states lying is sometimes even a moral duty such as a situation where you’re lying to protect someone from serious harm. For example, when you lie to protect another’s feelings, it usually has a lot more positive effects than the negative ones. An example is if you know your neighbor abuses his wife and he tells you not to tell anyone but after that you told the police. This is a very good lie that protects others from what might have been death. The positive effects almost always outweigh the negative effects, so you can be sure that when you lie to protect others almost no one will be upset because you lied. In addition, when you lie people don’t really want to hear the truth. If you did tell them the straight truth it would be harsh and that could end friendships or relationships. I think we have to sugarcoat things in order to make it easier to take. This further supports my argument because even the victims of lying want to be lied to because they want to hear what they want to hear, not the cruel
