The tragic play of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is about two star-crossed lovers who, knowing their stars aren’t aligned, end their lives. They live in Verona where their two families, the Capulets and the Montagues, are in a feud that can only end with them. Many things happened during the course of the play that led to their deaths. Although many people can be blamed, Lord Capulet is the guiltiest of them all.
Firstly, Lord Capulet was part of the reason there was a feud in the beginning. He, being the lord over the house, engaged in a bloody feud with the Montagues, arising “from a strong desire to uphold their family’s pride” (3). Trying “to bridge the feelings of animosity and hatred” (3) between the two families, Friar Lawrence married Juliet to Romeo. He is the one who secretly married Romeo and Juliet even though he had hesitations. He is the one who came up with the plan that ultimately lead to the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. “This plan went so foully awry that Romeo believed she was truly dead and killed himself, so he could lie by her side, which led to Juliet's own real death as well” (2). It had too many risks, but he did it anyway. He could have “simply intervened on her behalf, explained his involvement in the couple's secret marriage, and then brought her to Romeo in Mantua” (2). If he would have been more honest, Romeo and Juliet might not have died. Even though his poor decisions ultimately caused their deaths, Friar Lawrence wouldn’t have had to make them “had their hatred not existed. “He never would have had to marry them in secret, and he never would have had to fake Juliet's death, which are both events that lead up to their deaths”
