Why Is It Important To Read The Iliad By Homer?

After I read the Iliad by Homer, I had to do some thinking. Now, I am not great at understanding these types of poems, stories, or whatever they may be. So, I read it again and again and again until I understood what was going on. Homer was a famous poet that lived during the eighth century B.C.E., and was the key in shaping the Greek outlook. He is the author of the famous poems, the Iliad and the Odyssey. He was believed to he a heroic figure in that he always wanted to strive for excellence. According the excerpts from the Iliad, (that we discussed in class) the Iliad with the, “Trojan War between the Mycenaean Greeks and the Trojans of Asia Minor”. Another moral lesson I learned was that even though suffering is difficult, at some point in time we all go through it and have to overcome it. Nothing worth having comes easy and overcoming anything is not impossible. On page 4 in the Iliad it says, “And yet he has to suffer, every day he lives and sees the sun; and I can do no good by going to his side. But I will go, none the less, to see my darling child and hear what grief has come to him, although he has abstained from fighting.” Achilles mother, Thetis, says this, as she has to see her son suffer each day. I understand exactly where she is coming from and I cannot imagine how she must have felt. But she needed to know that with difficulty comes
