Why Is George Washington Important

George Washington was born in 1732 in Virginia. His mother was Mary Ball and his father, Augustine Washington. In 1743 his father died. He inherited 10 slaves and land. This ends up being an ironic part in his life later on. The major role he played in the shaping of America was being elected the commander of the Continental Army. For 8 years he held this position and it ended up being a very good decision on the American’s part. Prior to Washington becoming the leader of the Continental Army, he had never commanded any sort of army in any battlefield. He got the position out of just a handful of candidates. Firstly, he avoided the total destruction of his army and himself at New York in 1776. He went up against General William Howe, and he had no chance of winning the battle. He managed to escape before they were wiped out. Even though he didn’t win the battle he proved his decisions were good. Instead of staying and fighting a losing battle, literally, he pulled out and saved his army. Washington also crossed the Delaware River. Twice. His victory at Trenton is undoubtedly the best known victory of the war.
