During this time in age there are many tales of mysteries and remorse, but they don't have the same grandeur as around the time Edgar Allan Poe was alive. Poe is considered the father of those types of stories that we have today. During the time Edgar was growing up there were many misfortunes that happened to him; Poe lost his biological parents at a very young age, separated from his siblings to live with a foster family, when he was older he didn’t get along well with his foster father, and his wife passed away in 1847 before he did in 1849. In the The Cask of Amontillado Montresor says, “A wrong is undressed when retribution overtakes its redresser” (Poe ),meaning to ‘to correct an error, or a fault, or an evil’. This could imply Edgar had a mind set that revenge and betrayal is a never-ending cycle, unless the parties involved reach some sort of agreement, or one of them dies, which is reflected in Montresor. In one paragraph Montresor said, “The wine sparkled his eyes and the bells jingled. My own fancy grew warm with the Medoc.” (Poe ),suggesting that the wine gave both men courage and a sense of elation, with Fortunato letting down his guard and making Montresor more alert and aware.
