During March 2-4, I attended the OR-AMP/PNW-LSAMP Conference at Oregon State University. This conference works to motivate and encourage minority participation in the STEM fields. Amas Aduviri, the Director of SSS/CAMP at Oregon State University, gave a keynote about his life and the factors that have brought him where he is today. Aduviri was born in Bolivia with zero contact and communication from the advance world full of technology we live in today. He lived in the depths of the forests in Bolivia where technology or automobiles were only a mere concept of an idea in his head.…

Throughout the years many things have happened to shape how our society sees things. Also how technology has changed not only in improvements but also for every aspect of human life. It is crazy how many major events have changed the world mentally and physically. Many of the bad situations we have dealt with come from someone who was raised a certain way with a certain opinion and will not change for the life of themselves. What is sad, is the fact that the things that started many of our now big problems was something as simple as slavery.…

The Dominican Republic; a place where you can count the opportunities of success with one hand. If you didn’t have a connection to someone in the government, the chances of obtaining a job were improbable; this was common knowledge amongst the people of my country. I often found myself eavesdropping on my friends conversing about escaping to America. As tempting as America sounded, I knew illegally entering was wrong. I was 17 years old when the connotation of “America” changed for me; my father came home with wonderful news: we had been given the opportunity as a family to move to America.…

“I don’t know” I can still distinctly recall my eleven-year-old self repeatedly saying to anyone who tried to talk to me. It was my first day of school in America and that was the only sentence I could put together in English. I was born in China and lived there my whole life until my mother decided to move to New York. I thought I was just visiting her for winter break, but she dropped me off at school just a week after my arrival. As my new classmates tried to talk to me, I can see their mouth moving but they might as well be speaking gibberish.…

It is said that you find your way while you are in college, but I actually lost mine, and it was the best thing to ever happen to me. When I was four years old, I decided that I wanted to be a doctor and everything I did from that day forward was geared towards enhancing myself to be the best physician I could be. After my first year of my undergraduate degree at Michigan State University however, I was terrified to find that science and medicine did not hold the same draw for me as it always had. I found myself with the same passion for changing people’s lives, minus the desire for treating illnesses and researching medical conditions.…

Every day, my generation is bombarded with the new statistics and burdens of college expenses. The cost of college is becoming an ever-looming weight, shared by almost all students. The Forty Acres Scholars Program would help relieve this burden, and allow me to focus my attention on changing the world (and not on how to pay my next student loan installment). For example, though I've listed my desire to develop earlier computer science exposure, I also have a secret obsession with space exploration. As our population continues booming (currently at a rate of 250 people per minute), it is painfully obvious that our Earth will be unable to sustain the human race.…
