Why I Chose Nursing School

Improved Essays
Throughout my life in school, deciding on a major and career choice was a constant struggle for me. For example, during my high school years, I concocted dreams of becoming a civil engineer, theoretical physicist, marine biologist, and a political scientist. Deep inside of myself, I knew that although these careers interested me, they do not reflect my character or my passions. This year, which is my senior year, all of my confusion about my future vanished. It was as if this year was a turning point for me in finding out who I truly am. Last summer was when my decisions all fell into place. At the beginning of the summer, I was set on applying to Pennsylvania State University majoring in civil engineering. There was one problem though, and …show more content…
From helping others with simple tasks, to practically saving their lives, I felt that I found an area where I belonged. After discovering nursing, I decided to set up my job shadow at a local doctor’s office. Although I did receive a feel of the nursing profession, I realized that I do not want to be a nurse in Elk County. This is because there were only three patients who came in. Not only this, but the appointments were just check-ups. All I remember after seeing the patients was me staring at a wall and asking as many questions as I could during my time there. Nevertheless, I knew that this wasn’t the true reality of nursing and that there is so much more out there in the medical …show more content…
During the month of February this year, I realized that I should be looking for a new job for the summer. This is because at the library, I am a student page, meaning that my job ends once I graduate high school. The first job that I applied to was assistant bank telling at Northwest. I thought this would be a nice and clean job for the summer and was happy when I got scheduled for an interview. However, I somehow did not get chosen for the job and was very disappointed. I did not give up hope since I knew that applications for PHEAA were coming up. Through PHEAA, I applied to three positions and ended up getting hired as a Veteran Affairs office assistant at the Elk County Courthouse. Personally, I feel that this job will be similar to my library job in terms of cleanliness and professionalism. Also, I feel that this job will enhance my working experience and skills. Even though this job is not affiliated with nursing, it will provide me with new knowledge about the outside world and

Francis College. Throughout this time, I was working alongside Dr. Marika Cherfas and her medical staff of nurses. My observation of patient interactions with the doctor and nurses influenced me to do more than just help others by treating their illness or injury. The nurses’ actions were similar to the experience that I had when caring for others; they went beyond the physical. They empathized with their patients and ensured that while they comprehended their diagnosis, they also contributed to their mental wellbeing.…

Although our problem is about colleges, we don’t want students to be confused on what to do in life after college. We would get freshmen and sophomores focused on careers so as juniors they can find a college to match their career. Students would use the information we give them to fill out a worksheet for both careers and colleges to save for later use. We recognized that some students may not be interested in doing this so we decided to schedule an assembly in February where current seniors and former alumni give their experiences, stories, and regrets while preparing and applying to college. We are hoping that this will encourage students to do the worksheets and dedicate more time to preparing for…

In my perfect world people would live healthy lives; they would always pick the healthy option rather than the cheap more convenient one. Free clinics would be more readily available for the homeless or less fortunate. The public would be interested in precautions on how to prevent the spread of diseases and illnesses. Realistically this is a challenge that our world faces and is one of the many reasons why I want to pursue a degree in nursing. My desire to enter into the medical field and become a nurse stems back to when I was an adolescent; I can remember watching Dr. 90210 do multiple surgeries on patients and I can just remember myself saying “I want to be able to make people feel good about themselves, no matter what.”…
