It was because we lived in this close knitted community, which hosted numerous families from the US, UK, Canada and Australia who work for the very same company, that I had been keen to learn English. Understandably, as a young child I was eager to play with children my age in the local park; however, because many of those children were children of expat families who only spoke English, my efforts to communicate with them were in vain. Summary In the early mid- 1990s, Mary Beth Monahan, a sixth grade teacher from New Jersey introduced her students to the history and development of the English language. In the article “On the lookout for language”: Children as Language Detectives, Monahan introduces a strategy to introduce students to better understanding the language we speak and why we speak it in a certain way. Her goal was to provide students with a broad understanding of why “standard English” is seen as the proper and only form of English. She wanted her students to realize that other codes of English should not be seen as satire or looked down upon (Monahan & Henkin, 2003, pgs. 206-207)…

Moreover, qualitative research also attracts me in that it examines the nature of a particular setting in a particular moment or time period so that it does not necessarily have to predict the occurrences or situations in the future. In addition, it is the nature of qualitative research that interprets meanings from natural occurrences in…
