Why High School Should Start Later Essay

For many years, high school students have been complaining that school starts too early which results in their being denied sufficient sleep. While some people might argue that students claiming inadequate sleep could simply manage their time better, research conducted into the natural sleep patterns of adolescents supports the hypothesis that they naturally go to bed later and wake up much later.

Studies that show adolescent's who start their days too early experience conflict with their natural Circadian rhythms. As a result, most high school students do not experience a state of being fully awake and at peak awareness until about 8:30AM. It follows that beginning classes prior 8:30 AM compromises maximum productivity as it cannot be convincingly argued that school should begin before students are fully awake and aware.

Studies have shown that adolescents do not alter their bed times sufficiently to compensate for early start times. As a result, many teenagers will experience sleep deprivation. Inadequate sleep has been linked to countless health issues including obesity, depression, and drowsy driving, which can lead to more automobile accidents. To the contrary, a recent poll of students found that sixty percent of kids under the age of eighteen said they were tired during the whole school day. In addition, fourteen percent of those responding to the poll reported falling asleep at some point during class. Students who experience this level of tiredness cannot possibly learn at the same level as they would if they were alert. These.
