Why Does Beowulf Want To Fight

Hi Sabrina. I really loved reading your post but if you had explained why Beowulf wanted to fight Grendel in more detailed way it would make your post more interesting to a reader rather than just quoting directly from the book. I think Beowulf says that he will fight Grendel in hand to hand combat without using any weapons because he wanted to show Grendel that he is a true warrior which is why he mentions that "the victory will be chosen by god." Also Beowulf knew that the weapons would not harm Grendel in any way that is why he wanted the fight to be fair so he said that he wanted a fist fight. Other than that I agree with you in most of the part as you have similar idea and mine. The one thing I liked about your post is that you have included

Beowulf stays true to his word and takes on the monster, bravely (and almost recklessly) casting aside man made objects to give Grendel a ‘fair’ fight. Beowulf also acts with honor and virtue. This characteristic is seen many times but is most notable when he fights Grendel in hand-to-hand combat; he argues that is would give him an unfair advantage against the beast and make the victory cheap and unworthy. The warrior’s code that he abides to is what makes him extend the same respect he would to any other foe to Grendel.…

The hero claimed Grendel’s arm that had ripped off of the monster’s body as a trophy for his success. Fighting Grendel with no armor and keeping Grendel’s arm as a prize proves that Beowulf’s character had developed into a confident, young hero. Although he is fighting this monster because he is protecting people, the fight with this outcast is easy to him, and brings him to the height of his…

In the first battle that takes place, Beowulf battles Grendel. Before the battle Beowulf told the people of Hrothgar's kingdom that they should remain calm and that he came to defeat the horrible monster and if he did not defeat the monster that he would have died trying. Beowulf asks the king for permission to fight alone and with the help of only his own men. He believes that there is nothing that contains enough power to defeat him in this battle, therefore he goes in with no worries. The motive for Beowulf in this battle is revenge against the monster that committed crimes against Beowulf’s kinsman.…

Before going into battle with Grendel, Beowulf made the decision not to fight with a weapon because Grendel didn’t have one. Beowulf stated, “hand-to-hand is how it will be, a life-and-death fight with the fiend. Whichever one death fells must deem it a just judgement by God” (Heaney 13). This quote demonstrates the not only is humility need to defeat evil, but courage as well. It took a lot of courage to fight Grendel with no armor or sword and just fight bare handed.…

Sacred of monsters , well in the Beowulf there are three monsters that Beowulf had to fight . He fought Grendel , Grendel’s Mom , and the dragon each of these monsters has different types of fighting and are significantly different from each other like the way they fight or how Beowulf had to fight them. And each monster had a pacific reason why they had to fight Beowulf. This fight is more difficult for Beowulf than the fight with Grendel, as Beowulf is angry and his cause to kill is not pure: “He scoured the dwelling in single-minded anger” (1572-3). Beowulf only wins the fight because God has given him a sword. Yet that sword is melted by Grendel’s mother’s blood, which might suggest how powerful vengeance can be: it can destroy the God’s gift and make a man alienate himself from God. Beowulf is open to the evil of vengeance, which makes him a flawed hero in the Christian…

The real question is “Why?” , why would Beowulf take it amongst himself to set out and risk his life to defeat these monsters? Why did he not allow Hrothgar to fight against Grendel and his mother since it was Hrothgar’s kingdom? Were these battles just a display of Beowulf’s heroic nature, or was it much deeper than that? These questions can be answered differently depending on the critic.…

Why did he do what he did? (An analysis of Beowulf’s motivations) In the story Beowulf by, Burton Raffel, Beowulf demonstrates many things that make him a great leader, prince, and the best hero that his people have ever had. In the story, the question is brought up several times in asking “why?”. Meaning, why does Beowulf do all the things that he does, when he never really received anything for the things that he has done.…

I agree to Vaught’s argument that Beowulf’s battle with Grendel’s mother is more exciting and important to show Beowulf’s heroism in the poem than is his earlier battle with Grendel because the development of the story shows the development of Beowulf’s heroism. The fight with Grendel could be regarded as a precursor to show Beowulf’s overall heroism in the poem, just as “his successful introduction to the king”, because the description of this fight is relatively shorter than that of the fight with Grendel’s mother. Furthermore the fight with Grendel works as a means to show Beowulf’s characteristic feature that “is not with animalistic instincts of rage or fear, but with something potentially heroic and particularly human” which differs…

Beowulf has many life threatening battles but he is not frightened because he puts his trust and physical ability in God and believes that whatever the outcome is that it is in God’s plan. Grendel is viewed as a character associated with the devil and always trying to cause trouble. “To feud with Almighty God: Grendel saw that his strength was deserting him, his claws bound fast… (49).This expresses the societies’ belief in God and that there was a devil. In ones own life, their will always be struggles that one will have to overcome. He fights with a code of honor and does not do it out of anger or revenge. Beowulf’s whole reasoning for fighting Grendel’s mother is revenge. Yes, Grendel’s mom comes to the mead-hall looking for revenge for her son’s death, but Beowulf first killed Grendel and keeping his arm. Grendel’s mother only comes for her son’s arm and for revenge. She wants to avenge her son and take back technically what is hers.…

He was not going to fight Grendel because he was honoring this moral of having a fair fight. Grendel had never been exposed to these weapons therefor he does not have the knowledge on how to use them. Beowulf had an honorable battle and stuck beside the core values in the heroic code.
