Nursing is a profession that requires knowledge advancement (Brown, 2013). The objective of nursing is to set goals and achieve them. As nurses perform duties through their careers, new information surfaces. Be it information from within the nursing community or information from other professions. To stay current on how to care for our patients, we must stay current on the knowledge that is available. We owe it to our patients to be providing the best care known. To say we cannot use other knowledge says we cannot provide the best care. The argument to the precious statement states that if nursing wants to develop, there must be some information that is borrowed from other disciplines (Brown, 2013). Why not look at borrowing theories as a way of improving the relationships between disciplines. This would provide a similar framework to handle patients in similar situations. We work with other disciplines all the time and we all hold the same desire and that is to provide the best care to our patients. An interesting statement in an article I read was “knowledge does not innately belong to any field of science”(Brown, 2013). I couldn’t agree more.
