Why Do We Grow Aging?

Decent Essays

Your digestive system moves food through your body by a series of muscle contractions. The process occasionally slows down as we grow older and ultimately can cause food to move at a slower pace through the colon.

Water is also harder to retain in the body as we get older, which decreases blood pressure and slows the speed of nutrients circulating within the body. This can effect motor abilities in an individual, by making their muscles weaker due to lack of nutrients and poor hydration (1). This aspect of cellular aging is concentrated on physical declination rather than cognitive declination. Becoming physically less able can be upsetting for the aging individual. Not being able to perform day to day tasks can change almost everything about a person's lifestyle.…

The “aging-out process is the tendency for youths to reduce the frequency of their offending behavior as they age” (Siegel Pg. 49). One of the biggest reasons I feel juveniles “age-out” of crime would be an increase in responsibility. This may not be valid for every individual, but with age comes an increased sense of responsibility. From family, work, school and friends, there are people that are counting on that individual to be a responsible, law abiding citizen within their respective communities. “As youths grow older, they take on new responsibilities that are inconsistent with criminality.…

Schope (2005) contends that there are two competing theories on gay male aging – accelerated aging and crisis competence. The theory of accelerated aging contends that gay men view themselves as older at a time when heterosexual men do not. This echoes the commonly accepted statement that a gay man is old when he turns 30. Gay men who come out in their late twenties or in their thirties may even feel like they have jumped right from adolescence to middle or old age. Gay men may interpret aging inappropriately because they lack the markers such as the birth or graduation of a child that guide perceptions of age for heterosexuals (Kooden & Flowers, 2000, cited in Schope, 2005).…

When I first read this, I kept stopping after the first line thinking how we could consider the old dishonorable. They are weighted down with a life-long story, one that bears to be told no matter who they are or were. Seneca references how our age is all we have to show for our time here. I disagree, we leave behind the ability to share our stories, our battles and struggles or our loves of a life time. Our lives are a legacy to be told, the truth in this story is the sad events of those who’ve died anonymously.…
